2019 Think Brick Awards Entrant

We have been receiving a lot of technical enquiries recently here at Think Brick on stackbonded masonry walls lately. For your benefit, here’s a bit of info on this beautiful architectural masonry technique.

Stackbonded masonry is created when bricks are stacked directly on top of one another, rather than offset as seen in stretcher bonded masonry. The result of this stacking allows for verticality to be emphasised, as perpend joints run up and down the full length of the brickwork. Stackbonded walls are currently covered in AS 3700 in section 4.12, however, Think Brick has developed a handy factsheet providing some more detail as to how these walls can be designed properly. It has some great tips and tricks, and showcases some great examples of how this technique can be realised in modern architecture. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gxdyxgg

The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts at Monash University is one project that utilises stackbonding successfully in its design. Architects from Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design used Austral Bricks’s La Paloma bricks in Miro to create a wall that is both light and textural in nature. They even turned the bricks on their side to expose the cores like a breeze block, giving a new look to the stackbonded wall. This project was an entrant in our 2019 Think Brick Awards, and exemplifies bricklaying craftsmanship of the highest order.
